Tree Discourse Grammar or How to Get Attached to a Discourse?
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper I describe a discourse grammar which is based on a further development of a Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG). Adding features and the restriction that a newly processed sentence can only be added on the right frontier of the discourse tree, I follow Gardent's description of a Tree Insertion Grammar (TIG). I extend this formalism with respect to world and contextual knowledge, using a non-monotonic reasoning system similar to Lascarides and Asher (1993). The rhetorical relations are represented by a constrained sort hierarchy which allows a precise deenition of the semantics{pragmatics interface for discourse processing. Moreover, the attachment to an already processed discourse can be explained by the restriction of the discourse tree.

A Critical Study of Selected Political Elites' Discourse in English
This study explored how political elites can contribute to power enactment through using language. It started with a theoretical overview of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and then presented a corpus consisting of speeches of eight political elites, namely, Malcolm X, Noam Chomsky, Martin Luther King, Josef Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Winston Churchill, J.F. Kennedy and Adolph Hitler. This stud...
متن کاملDiscourse Multiple Dependencies
It is sometimes claimed (cf. that discourse has a tree structure which reeects the semantic structure of discourse. In this paper, I argue that this claim is problematic in cases of discourse multiple dependencies i.e. cases where one discourse segment is semantically related to two discourse segments. I develop a discourse framework which is based on Scha/Polanyi 1988] but integrates ideas fro...

This article introduces Discourse Combinatory Categorial Grammar (DCCG) and shows how it can be used to generate multisentence paraphrases, flexibly incorporating both intraand intersentential discourse connectives. DCCG employs a simple, practical approach to extending Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) to encompass coverage of discourse-level phenomena, which furthermore makes it possible t...
متن کاملDiscourse Tree Adjoining Grammar
It is generally agreed that discourse has a recursive structure and that this structure aaects the semantic interpretation of discourse. Despite this consensus however, few proposals give a precise specii-cation of how the syntax of discourse relates to its semantics. In this paper, I use a variant of Feature-Based Tree Adjoining Grammars to construct discourse structure and its associated sema...
متن کاملD-LTAG: extending lexicalized TAG to discourse
This paper surveys work on applying the insights of lexicalized grammars to low-level discourse, to show the value of positing an autonomous grammar for low-level discourse in which words (or idiomatic phrases) are associated with discourse-level predicate–argument structures or modification structures that convey their syntactic-semantic meaning and scope. It starts by describing a lexicalized...
